Masdar and Endesa begin construction of $28m battery storage projects in Spain

Three projects will add 120.34 MWh of storage capacity to solar plants in Extremadura and Andalusia by end of 2027.

Masdar and Endesa have started construction of three battery storage projects in Spain with a combined investment of $28.3 million. The projects at Ardila, La Vega I and La Vega II will add 60.16 megawatts of battery storage capacity and 120.34 megawatt-hours of storage to solar plants in Extremadura and Andalusia, Masdar said in a statement on 5 November 2026. The plants are expected to be operational by the end of 2027 and will create 50 jobs during construction.

Battery storage projects add grid flexibility#

The three facilities will store power during periods of low demand and release it at peak times, providing flexible energy to the grid. Battery energy storage technology balances and stabilises the intermittent supply from renewable sources. The projects will help integrate more clean power into Spain's grid. Spain aims to reach 81 percent renewable electricity generation by 2030, including wind power capacity of 62 gigawatts and solar capacity of 76 gigawatts, as part of its target to become net zero in emissions by 2050.

Masdar expands Iberian portfolio to 4.1 GW operational capacity#

Masdar acquired a stake in Endesa's photovoltaic assets in Spain in 2024. The company now operates 4.1 gigawatts of capacity across the Iberian Peninsula and has around 1 gigawatt under development. Abu Dhabi's Taqa, Adnoc and Mubadala jointly own Masdar. The company has set a target of 100 gigawatts of portfolio capacity by 2030 as it develops renewable projects globally. The total investment in the three Spanish battery storage projects is €25.2 million.

Recent battery storage and solar project activity#

In October 2026, Masdar started construction on its first project in Malaysia, a 200MW floating solar development at Chereh Dam in Parang state, built by a consortium that also includes Malaysia's Citaglobal and investment firm Tiza Global. In August 2026, Masdar launched its second battery energy storage system project in Rochdale, near Manchester in the UK, following another project near Stockport launched in December 2025. Ibraheem Almansouri, acting chief operating officer of Masdar, said the company will continue to invest in Spain.
